Hearthstone Pity Timer: The Hidden 40-Pack Guarantee
How the per-set 40-pack pity timer works, why your counter never shows in game, and how to exploit it. · Updated 2026-11-04
The One-Paragraph Answer
Legendaries drop in about 5% of packs, and the 40th pack from a set since your last legendary is guaranteed to contain one. The timer is per expansion, invisible in-game, and resets on each legendary. Enter your dry-pack count in the pack calculator to see what your next stretch really holds.
Per-Set Counters Are the Rule Everyone Misses
The pity clock is tracked separately for every expansion. Open 30 Whizbang's Workshop packs dry, then switch to a new set — your Workshop clock keeps ticking at 30, untouched. This cuts both ways: spreading gold across sets means several clocks inching toward 40; concentrating on one set means one clock racing there. When a set is about to rotate out of Standard, a clock near 40 is effectively a guaranteed legendary redeemable before rotation — the single most-exploitable fact about the system.
The Numbers, Precisely
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Legendary per pack | ≈5% (official) |
| Expected packs per legendary | 17.4 (below 20, thanks to the floor) |
| Coin-flip point (P50) | 14 packs |
| P90 | 40 packs |
| Chance of hitting the 39-pack wall | 13.5% |
Blizzard publishes the per-expansion probabilities in-game (the 2023-03 disclosure rules), and community tracking has consistently confirmed the legendary figures. Epics average one per five packs — but no official epic pity floor exists, so this site models only the legendary guarantee.
Practical Play
Track your per-set counters in the calculator (a bookmark per set is enough), spend gold where the clock is highest, and let rotation deadlines make the "guaranteed before it leaves Standard" call for you. The pity timer turns pack opening from pure luck into a slow, plannable budget.
