Defaults to 23.8 sq ft for laminate; box sizes vary by product, so copy the label.

Waste Factors by Material

Every flooring order includes extra material for cuts, mistakes, and defects — the percentage depends on how the product cuts and fails: LVP/vinyl plank ~7% (click-lock, cuts clean, few unusable pieces), laminate ~10% (chip-outs and board-length staggering), hardwood ~10% (natural defects you will cull), and tile ~15% (breakage plus pattern cuts at edges and corners). Diagonal layouts, herringbone, and small or L-shaped rooms push every number higher — add 5–10 points before ordering.

The Questions the Box Count Answers

“How many boxes?” is really three questions: will the truckload cover the room (area + waste), will you have spares for later repairs (keep one box sealed), and what will it cost (boxes × price). For the surrounding math — underlayment rolls, transitions, baseboards — measure linear feet of wall for trim and check the tile calculator for tile-specific layouts. Painting the room too? The paint calculator works the same way for the walls.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much extra flooring should I buy?

Add 7% for LVP and vinyl plank, 10% for laminate and hardwood, and 15% for tile — that covers cuts, culling defective boards, and breakage. Add another 5–10 points for diagonal or herringbone layouts or rooms with many corners. The extra is not optional: running one box short mid-job risks a dye-lot mismatch on the reorder.

How many boxes of laminate for a 12×12 room?

A 12 × 12 room is 144 sq ft; with laminate's 10% waste factor that is 158.4 sq ft. At a typical 23.8 sq ft per box, you need 7 boxes. Check your product's actual box coverage — it varies from about 18 to 25 sq ft — and let the calculator do the rounding.

Can I return unopened flooring boxes?

Most retailers accept returns of unopened, undamaged boxes within 30–90 days with a receipt — which is exactly why you should order with the waste factor rather than exact-fit and return the spare. The exception worth breaking: keep one sealed box in storage. Flooring lines get discontinued, and a repair in three years needs matching planks.
