DIY Concrete Project Checklist

Measured the project area accurately

Measure length and width of the area to be poured. For irregular shapes, break into rectangles and triangles

Calculated the concrete volume needed

Multiply area by depth (usually 4 inches for patios, 6 inches for driveways). Add 5-10% extra for waste and variations

Chosen the right concrete mix type

Standard 3000 PSI for patios and walkways, 4000+ PSI for driveways. Consider fiber-reinforced or air-entrained for freeze/thaw climates

Checked local permits and building codes

Many municipalities require permits for concrete work over a certain size. Check setback requirements and property line rules

Cleared and leveled the ground

Remove grass, rocks, and organic material. Compact the soil with a plate compactor. Add 2-4 inches of gravel base for drainage

Built and secured the forms

Use straight 2x4 or 2x6 lumber staked firmly. Check for level with a string line. Coat forms with oil or release agent for easy removal

Gathered all necessary tools and materials

Wheelbarrow, shovel, rake, float, trowel, edger, level, rubber boots, gloves. Have a hose with a misting nozzle ready for curing

Arranged concrete delivery or picked up bags

For projects over 1 cubic yard, ready-mix delivery is easier. Order for early morning. For smaller jobs, calculate how many bags you need (60lb = 0.45 cu ft)

Mixed concrete to the right consistency

For bagged concrete, follow the water ratio exactly. The mix should hold its shape when squeezed but not be crumbly. Avoid adding too much water

Poured and spread concrete evenly

Start at the far end and work toward you. Use a rake to spread, then a straight 2x4 to screed (level) across the forms. Fill low spots immediately

Leveled and finished the surface

Screed first, then bull float to bring cream to surface. Wait until water sheen disappears before final troweling. Use an edger along forms for clean edges

Cured the concrete properly

Keep concrete moist for at least 7 days — mist with water, cover with plastic sheeting, or apply curing compound. Do not walk on it for 24 hours, wait 7 days for light use, 28 days for full strength
