How TV and Monitor Sizes Are Measured
The screen size advertised for every TV and monitor is the diagonal measurement of the visible screen area. That means the distance from the bottom-left corner to the top-right corner (or any opposite corners). This has been the industry standard since the early days of television and has carried over into the monitor market.
There are a few important caveats. First, the measurement refers only to the screen itself, not including the bezel (the frame around the display). So a β55-inch TVβ does not mean the TV is 55 inches wide β it means the screen diagonal is 55 inches. The total width including the bezel will be slightly larger, though modern bezels are so thin that the difference is usually less than an inch.
