How to Calculate Area for Any Shape (Formulas and Examples)

April 17, 2026 ยท Math

Calculating area comes up way more often than most people expect. You need it when buying flooring, figuring out how much paint to get for a room, planning a garden bed, or checking whether that new sectional couch will actually fit in your living room. Each shape has its own formula, and once you know them, a lot of everyday math gets a whole lot easier.

This guide covers the essential formulas, walks through practical examples, and tackles the tricky stuff like irregular shapes and unit conversions.

The basic shapes and their formulas

These five shapes cover the vast majority of area calculations you'll ever need to do.

Rectangle

Area = Length ร— Width

The easiest one. A room that's 12 feet long and 10 feet wide has an area of 120 square feet. A standard piece of printer paper (8.5" ร— 11") has an area of 93.5 square inches. You probably use this formula without even thinking about it.

Triangle

Area = ยฝ ร— base ร— height

The height here is the perpendicular distance from the base to the opposite vertex โ€” not the length of the slanted side. A triangular garden bed with a base of 6 feet and a height of 4 feet: Area = 0.5 ร— 6 ร— 4 = 12 square feet.

Circle

Area = ฯ€ ร— rยฒ

Here, ris the radius โ€” the distance from the center to the edge. If you have the diameter (the full width across), just divide by 2 first. A circular patio with a radius of 5 feet: Area = 3.14159 ร— 5ยฒ = 3.14159 ร— 25 = 78.54 square feet.

Parallelogram

Area = base ร— height

Looks like a squished rectangle. The formula is the same as a rectangle โ€” just remember to use the perpendicular height, not the slanted side. A parallelogram with a base of 8 meters and a height of 5 meters has an area of 40 square meters.

Trapezoid

Area = ยฝ ร— (a + b) ร— height

Where a and bare the lengths of the two parallel sides. A trapezoidal countertop with parallel sides of 3 feet and 5 feet, and a height of 2 feet: Area = 0.5 ร— (3 + 5) ร— 2 = 0.5 ร— 8 ร— 2 = 8 square feet.

Practical example: how much paint do you need for a room?

Here's where this math actually saves you money. Say you want to paint a bedroom that's 14 feet long, 12 feet wide, and 8 feet tall. The room has one standard window (3' ร— 4') and one door (3' ร— 7').

Step 1:Calculate the wall area. There are four walls. Two of them are 14ร—8 and two are 12ร—8.

  • Two long walls: 2 ร— (14 ร— 8) = 2 ร— 112 = 224 sq ft
  • Two short walls: 2 ร— (12 ร— 8) = 2 ร— 96 = 192 sq ft
  • Total wall area: 224 + 192 = 416 sq ft

Step 2: Subtract the window and door.

  • Window: 3 ร— 4 = 12 sq ft
  • Door: 3 ร— 7 = 21 sq ft
  • Total to subtract: 33 sq ft
  • Paintable area: 416 โˆ’ 33 = 383 sq ft

Step 3: Check the paint coverage. Most interior paint covers about 350-400 square feet per gallon. At 383 sq ft, you need one gallon for one coat, or two gallons for two coats. Buying one gallon and touching up from a second would work for a single coat โ€” but if you want two coats (usually the right call), grab two gallons.

Irregular shapes: break them down

Most rooms aren't perfect rectangles. An L-shaped room, for example, is just two rectangles stuck together. The trick is to mentally (or physically on paper) divide the shape into pieces you can calculate individually.

Imagine an L-shaped living room. One section is 15 feet long and 10 feet wide. The other section extends 8 feet out and is 6 feet wide. Break it into two rectangles:

  • Rectangle A: 15 ร— 10 = 150 sq ft
  • Rectangle B: 8 ร— 6 = 48 sq ft
  • Total: 150 + 48 = 198 sq ft

This approach works for practically any irregular shape. If you have a room with a curved bay window, calculate the main rectangle and then add the area of the circular segment. If your yard is a weird polygon, sketch it on grid paper and break it into triangles and rectangles.

Unit conversions for area calculations

One of the most common sources of errors in area calculations is mixing units. Your room is measured in feet, but the flooring you're buying is priced per square meter. Or you need to convert acres to square feet for a property listing. Here's a quick reference:

1 square foot = 0.0929 square meters

1 square meter = 10.764 square feet

1 acre = 43,560 square feet

1 acre = 4,047 square meters

1 hectare = 10,000 square meters

1 hectare = 2.471 acres

1 square yard = 9 square feet

1 square mile = 640 acres

A practical example: you're looking at a property listed as 0.35 acres. In square feet that's 0.35 ร— 43,560 = 15,246 sq ft. For comparison, a standard NFL football field (including end zones) is about 57,600 sq ft โ€” so this property is roughly a quarter of a football field.

If you find yourself doing a lot of these conversions, our unit converter handles all the math for you.

Common mistakes that throw off your calculations

  • Confusing radius and diameter in circle calculations. This is the number one error. If a circular rug is advertised as 6 feet across, that's the diameter. The radius is 3 feet. Using 6 instead of 3 means your area will be four times too large.
  • Forgetting the ยฝ in the triangle formula. Without it, you'll overestimate the area by a factor of 2. It's easy to do when you're working fast โ€” just remember that a triangle is exactly half of a rectangle with the same base and height.
  • Mixing units.If the length is in feet and the width is in inches, you'll get nonsense. Convert everything to the same unit first. A room that's 12 feet by 144 inches is not 1,728 square feet โ€” it's 12 feet by 12 feet, which is 144 square feet.
  • Measuring the wrong dimension for height. In triangles and parallelograms, height means the perpendicular distance โ€” straight up and down from the base, not the length of the slanted side.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the area of an irregular shape?

Break it into basic shapes you know the formulas for โ€” rectangles, triangles, circles. Calculate each piece separately and add them up. For complex shapes, graph paper helps a lot. You can also use the shoelace formula if you know the coordinates of each vertex, or use an online tool that lets you trace the outline on a map or image.

What's the difference between area and perimeter?

Area measures the total space inside a shape (in square units), while perimeter measures the distance around the outside edge (in linear units). A 10ร—10 foot room has an area of 100 square feet but a perimeter of 40 feet. You need area for flooring and paint; you need perimeter for baseboards and fencing.

How many square feet are in an acre?

Exactly 43,560 square feet. That's roughly 90% of a football field. An average suburban lot in the US is about 0.2 to 0.35 acres, which is 8,712 to 15,246 square feet.

How do I calculate area from a map?

Use the map's scale to convert distances. If the scale is 1 inch = 100 feet, trace your shape on paper, calculate the area in square inches, then multiply by 100ยฒ = 10,000 to get square feet. Google Earth and similar tools can do this automatically โ€” right-click on the map, draw a polygon, and it'll give you the area in whatever unit you want.
